Colin Wilson Looks For Consistency and Tuesday Tidbits

The Nashville Predators are expecting big things this year from Colin Wilson in his second year as a pro. He has been given every chance to succeed in the preseason playing mostly on the wing with Matthew Lombardi and Marty Erat.

At the beginning of last season he was hobbled by a chronic groin problem and had only 2 points in 10 NHL games. He was sent to Milwaukee to rehab where after a slow start, he performed at a point a game pace.

Wilson was recalled by the Predators in early February and played in the Predators last 25 games, scoring seven goals and picking up six assists. His minutes were reduced in the playoffs when he played all six games and picked up a lone assist.

Over the summer, Wilson continued to rehab from his groin injury and incorporated much more stretching into his workout routine. He indicates that his groin is much improved, "It's doing really good, It definitely feels a lot better than last season. I still feel tweaks here and there but that is a part of the game."

After the Olympic break last season, there were times when Wilson appeared to be the best player on the ice and then he would fade into background and go unnoticed for a while. When asked about this he explained, "Yea that's what learning to be a pro is all about. You have to be consistent."

Wilson continued, "It's a cliche to be never too high or never too low but sometimes I got too satisfied with myself after having a really good period or really good game and I would come out and not be quite as focused so I'm definitely striving to be more consistent this year."

"It's a mental approach, just learning the game, learning about yourself, and learning that you have to be focused all the time."

Like everyone else on the team, Wilson's ultimate goal for the year is to win the Stanley Cup. As an individual, he hopes to "become a regular NHLer with the Preds and score as many goals as possible and contribute to the team."

In the preseason, Wilson played in five of the Predators six games and picked up two assists and was plus 2 on a team that only scored 13 goals.

Once the season is underway, it seems plausible that if Wilson continues to play on one of the top lines, that a 20 goal, 50 point season is within the realm of possibilities, which would be considered a successful campaign for the one of the Preds' top prospects for the future.

Programming Note...

For those who missed us having POTG Radio last night, I will be a co-host on today's RLD Hockey Talk at noon central. Guests are scheduled to be Chris Johnson, the Canadian Press and Puck Daddy's Sean Leahy. This will be Ryan's last preview show as we look at the Northeast and Pacific Divisions.

In Pred Nation...

The Predators Meet the Team Party for season ticket holders was a huge success last night. Several thousand folks were in attendance for autographs and a sampling of food from the concessionaires. There appears to be an optimism for the season beyond anything seen before in Nashville. It was fun seeing friends and meeting a bunch of folks for the first time as we wandered the hallways, taking it all in. Here is an article and photo gallery from the event at Preds.com.

Puck Daddy catches up with Matthew Lombardi and discusses a wide range of topics.

SabresForecheck came up with an interesting discovery. With Arnott gone, the Preds are the only team without a player that has won the Stanley Cup.

Bryan Mullen has the story of what a healthy Joel Ward will mean to this year's Predators.

David Boclair discusses the fast start that is expected from Pekka Rinne this season.

Yesterday, the Twitterverse was ablaze with a rumor that started in Los Angeles that the Predators were expected to claim Eric Ersberg on waivers. Josh Cooper spoke with Barry Trotz after practice and he claimed that the Preds had no interest in Ersberg and were happy with the tandem of Pekka Rinne and Anders Lindback.

Jeremy at Section 303 comments on the potential of the Predators claiming Erik Ersberg off of waivers and the issues that it would cause for all the goalies in the system.

The NHL and the Officials Association have come to terms on a new four year deal that will avoid any labor unrest as the season begins.

Major breakthrough in the cold war from @drosennhl: NHL & KHL have agreed that contracts in both leagues will be honored, no more Radulov-like stories. ESPN has more on the matter.

Preds at the Trade Deadline: Is Colin Wilson This Year's "Deadline Acquisition"?

Last year the Predators stood pat at the trade deadline because Steve Sullivan and other injured players were returning and David Poile indicated that hey were better than any of the free-agents available.

This year with an even more shaky financial picture for the Preds, will a healthy Colin Wilson be this year's free-agent acquisition?

A story this morning at AHL.com indicates Colin's season may be ready to begin his season in earnest now that his groin injury is improving.

I will be taking a look at the Pred's options as the deadline approaches later this week for NHL Hot Stove. If anyone has any burning opinions or thoughts on what may occur, I'd love to hear them.

Colin Wilson Assigned to Milwaukee

As had been expected, based on previous statements, Colin Wilson has been assigned to the Milwaukee Admirals on what is expected to be a "reconditioning" assignment.

Wilson has been plagued by a groin injury that has not resolved completely since training camp. He started the season on injured reserve, came back to play ten games and then missed the last eight contests.

Once he gets in game shape, he is expected to return to Nashville and continue his rookie season at the NHL Level.

Here is the complete release from the Predators...

PREDATORS ASSIGN FORWARD COLIN WILSON TO MILWAUKEE

Nashville, Tenn. (November 22, 2009) – Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile announced today that the club has assigned forward Colin Wilson to Milwaukee (AHL).

In his first 10 professional games with the Predators, the 20-year-old rookie posted a goal and an assist while averaging 13:57 of ice time. Wilson has missed the past eight games – and 11 games overall in 2009-10 – due to injury.

The Predators return to action on Monday when they take on the Detroit Red Wings at a special 6 p.m. CT start time. To be televised on VERSUS, the game is Nashville’s lone national television contest of the 2009-10 regular season. Tickets to this game, and all other regular season contests are now on sale and can be purchased by logging onto nashvillepredators.com. Tickets are also available by calling (615) 770-PUCK and at all Ticketmaster locations.

Pred Fans Rejoice in Colin Wilson's NHL Debut

The mystery of whether Colin Wilson would start in Milwaukee or Nashville was answered today with the announcement that Wilson would indeed make his NHL debut against the Oilers tonight at the Sommet Center.

Fellow writer Rachel was giddy after the surprise announcement that Colin Wilson would play his first NHL game on Monday. Big Kev was also ready to see Wilson play. Jackson is beside himself waiting to get picked up to go to the game.

Here is a story and video that we did back in May when Colin Wilson had just returned from the World Championships and came to Nashville for the first time as a pro. I was saving it for next week's "best of" series but this seems like a better time to rerun it.

My ending line of "Welcome to Nashville Colin! You will be a fan favorite." has already proven true.

Colin Wilson Comes to Music City

Colin Wilson, the Nashville Predator’s Top Prospect, made his Music City debut Sunday when he met with the local press and signed autographs for three hours for fans that were anxious to get a look at the youngster.

The 19 year old Center, who hails from Greenwich, CT, had a tremendous season this year. At Boston University, he finished second in the Hobey Baker voting (College Player of the Year) as he led the team in points (55) and assists (38) on the way to BU winning the NCAA National Championship.

Over the last few weeks, Wilson was the only non-NHL level player on the Team USA team that played in the World Championship Tournament in Switzerland. Earlier this year he played for the US Junior team at the World Junior tournament where he was named the Most Outstanding Player.

Wilson used his experience at the World Championships to see a faster game that made him realize what needed to be done to play on the NHL level. Wilson explained, “I learned there are certain parts of my game I’m going to have to work on if I want to be on the Predators and make an impact with the team.”

He gave Team USA and Predator teammate Ryan Suter credit for coaching him on many things while in Switzerland. “You have to learn a few things before going into training camp, how to be a pro, how to handle yourself off of the ice. I definitely learned that and more for off of the ice.”

Apart from the formal interview, we met an incredibly nice young man, fresh off the college campus that would be any parent's dream to have as a son. He is very polite and well spoken and will be adored by the Predator fans once he comes to Nashville for good, which may be sooner than you might think.

At the press conference, we got to witness a couple of really neat things. Prior to the interview Colin Wilson was given his first real Predator jersey with his name and number 33 sewn on the back. The jersey that he was given at the draft was a Velcro model so names could have been interchanged depending on who was taken in the draft.

The second thing that really says a lot about Wilson's character was that after the presser, he saw my son, Jackson, standing behind the rest of the crowd and Wilson walked over to Jackson and introduced himself.

On the surface, it doesn't seem like a big thing, but many kids his age, both in and out of sports, do not have the manners and courtesy to even notice that there was someone in a group of ten or so folks to whom he had not been introduced.

Colin Wilson is the prototype individual that a franchise can build a team around. He is a winner both on and off the ice.

Welcome to Nashville Colin! You will be a fan favorite.
