Last night's POTG Radio podcast is up and ready for listening. We were privileged to have Travis Hair of Five for Howling and The Yotes Diva, Heather McWhorter who runs the SaveThe Coyotes site on as our special Labor Day guests..
This was Heather's second time on the show and a POTG record setting fourth visit for Travis. They provided expert insight into the situation in Phoenix as it stands now leading up to the hearings Thursday and Friday of this week.
In what has become basically a pissing match between Gary Bettman and Jim Ballsillie, most folks fail to consider the plight of the fans and the fact that the value of the franchise is going down with each passing day. Listen to the podcast to hear a perspective you will not get elsewhere. Thanks to Travis and Heather for their keen insight and perspective.
Follow Heather on Twitter at the hearings later this week @TheYoyesDiva. Her play by play of the courtroom action is unparalleled.
In Phoenix...
Breaking news during the podcast was sketchy but the Toronto Star is now reporting that Jim Ballsillie raised his bid to $242.5 million by offering up to $50 million to the City of Glendale to drop their opposition. The math doesn't work on the surface and part of it includes rent on the arena for a portion of the upcoming season. Ballsillie's new "deadline" is September 21 for sale approval with closing by October 2.
The Globe reports some money shifting from other creditors to the City of Glendale to make the above math work out. Here's the local take on the news from the Arizona Republic and the Phoenix Examiner. Faceoff.com also has a version of the story as does the National Post.
As always, Mirtle has the final word on the latest bid. His coverage and analysis of the Coyotes saga has been the best since the story broke last spring.
Last night, Howard Bloom of Sports Business News was giddy Tweeting that Ballsillie's bid was a done deal. "Jim Balsillie is a closer and he will end up getting the Yotes. They will play in Phoenix for 1 year and then move to Hamilton. Here's how Diamond Jim gets the Coyotes: 242.5m bid, 35m operating loses for 09-10 season, 100m relocation fee = he WINS, $377M DONE DEAL. Just do the math, use common sense and the Coyotes end up in Hamilton -- bye, bye Desert Dogs, GREAT move for hockey and the NHL."
The Glendale City Council is meeting this morning to talk about the Ice Edge proposal and now they will have a lot more to think about with the $50 million offer from the Ballsillie camp.
One Canadian writer has nothing good to say about ex-Phoenix owner Jerry Moyes.
In Pred Nation...
The Forechecker is on a boat in the Caribbean but continues with his series on Predator Bloggers at On The Forecheck. Dirk was also asked to be a contributor to this year's version of the prestigious Maple Leaf's Annual.
Mark at The View from 111 has his Predators season preview up that differs from the one he did last week for Matt Rietz at The View From My Seats.
Jim Diamond at the Examiner puts out his preseason Power Ratings for the NHL and the Predators fare better than in most of the others that we have seen.
Lyle Richardson from Spector's Hockey has several bounce back players for the coming season and the list includes Dan Ellis.
Admiral's Short Shifts adds more to the rumor of the Preds signing a defenseman in a post from yesterday with Christian Backman and Chris Chelios mentioned. Backman is a 39 year old Swedish defenseman that played 56 games for Columbus last year. I still want Chris Chelios. He would be far more entertaining.
Around the NHL...
We mentioned it yesterday but this is such a huge project it is worth another take. Tyler at NHL Digest put together a calendar of epic proportions that has the birthday of every player that has played in the NHL. Expect to hear more today from Tyler as this is the official launch date for the project.
Trouble is looming on Long Island in meeting Charles Wang's October 3 deadline. Nick Giglia and B D Gallof write about it in separate posts.
The Usual Suspects discusses Darren Dreger's all night wait for the NHLPA and also his interview with Jeremy Roenick last Friday on Toronto 640 Leaf's Lunch. Here is the podcast from the show.
Leafs Lunch is one of the best hours of hockey talk that is available on the internet. Tune in here every day at 11:00 Central to hear Darren Dreger and Bill Waters with great guests on every show.
Canadian teams are facing travel issues due to a spat between US and Canadian regulators. This article talks about the need for Vancouver to make a pit stop in Toronto in between games in Tampa and Miami if the matter is not resolved.
Cycle Like the Sedins looks at fantasy goalies and doesn't have as high an opinion of Pekka Rinne as we do in Nashville.
Off Topic... It has been five years since the rash of hurricanes swept across Florida leaving massive destruction behind. One of the more well known pictures was of the First Baptist Church of Cocoa Beach where the steeple was impaled upside down in the roof. One of my best friends, Pastor Ken Babington, reflects on what happened in this story at Florida Today. One of these days, I'll write about my adventure when I went down for a few days to help with the church's rebuild.

Labor Day Weekend Wrap-up and POTG Radio Tonight
After the long Labor Day weekend, things in the Hockey world should really pick up steam both on and off the ice this week.
Eight teams have already started playing rookie games in Traverse City, Michigan in a tournament that has become more popular over the years as it is usually the first live hockey action of the season. Hockey's Future will have complete coverage all week. Most every other team's rookies begin in the next day or two with team's full camps opening by this weekend.
Off the ice, things continue to fester in Phoenix as two days of hearings are set for Thursday and Friday.
Tonight on POTG Radio, we will be joined by Travis Hair of Five for Howling and hopefully also by The Yotes Diva, Heather McWhorter. They are both dedicated Coyote fans and excellent writers that have followed every step of the legal action and can give insight from an insider's view that you won't hear elsewhere.
I realize a lot of folks are ready for resolution in the situation, and no one is more ready than the Phoenix season ticket holders. Tune in to the show this evening or on podcast after the completion to get the latest on this weeks hearings.

In the Desert...
The NHL finally came up with a couple of expert opinions of how much a relocation fee to Hamilton is worth and placed the figure at $101 to 195 million. This is considerably more than the 11.2 -12.9 figure that Ballsillie's camp projected. Mirtle has his complete analysis here.
Ice Edge Holdings has continued to compete in the bid process and completed a Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Glendale. There is a City Counsel meeting on Tue that could get interesting where all the potential bidders will be discussed.
In a filing by Jerry Moyes, he objects to everyone but PSE. Imagine that! Judge Baum was set to spend the weekend mulling over thousands of pages of documents in preparation for this week's hearing.
Another kink is that the NHL and the Toronto Maple Leafs pairing off over who has the final say on teritorial rights. As Mirtle points out, it can be read either way in the constitution.
In Pred Nation...
If you missed it over the long weekend, I posted the Pred's Practice schedule that begins with public sessions on Wednesday with the rookies.
I would like to thank Mark at The View from 111 and Michell Kenneth for kind words wishing my wife Cathy a speedy recovery in the middle of their recent posts. Michelle also takes a look at the Devil's season prospects at Inside Hockey.
Dirk the Forechecker is on a cruise in the Caribbean but rallied his fellow bloggers to contribute thoughts to his site this week. First up today is Brandon Felder from Hockey Buzz. I'm looking forward to this series in spite of our participation.
John Glennon at the Tennessean has has several stories since we last checked in including one today on the first player ever taken in the NHL Draft from the state of Alabama. He has also logged stories about the Pred's grinder line and the PowerPlay and Penalty Kill.
The Pred Blog world grew by one over the weekend, when Pred's Addict Jennifer started the Addicted Blog. Everyone should give her support as she starts her new venture.
Mirtle has good things to say about the Preds in an article today about the worsening situation in Tampa.
Ryan at the RedLight District, Paul McCann at Hockey Buzz, and Tim Rosenthal at Rosie's Hockey are all are previewing a team a day this month as we move closer to opening day.
In an ongoing trend of disrespect, The Sporting News picked the Preds to finish 26th.
From section303.com comes a new edition of the 303:30 @cellblock303: The O'Reilly re-signing, Chelios as a Pred & special guest comedian Mike Birbiglia (@birbigs) on The 303:30 THIS Saturday!
The Nashville Examiner's Jim Diamond contributes to the NHL Examiner's NHL preview series with a take on the Preds.
Dobber Hockey has a good analysis of AHL to NHL transitions that includes Cal O'Reilly as a case in point.
Alan Bass has the Preds as a "borderline" playoff team in his season preview at Inside Hockey.
Around the NHL...
Tyler at NHL Digest put together a calendar of epic proportions that has the birthday of every player that has played in the NHL. Even better, if you click on their name, you get a link to a map of their hometown. Being an ex-Geography major, I could spend days looking a this thing.
Matt Reitz from View from My Seats finished his week of team by team projections on Saturday. Follow the link to get to the final installment. It was an absolutely incredible endeavor to get folks from every team in the NHL to contribute to this project. Matt need to receive praise from all for his work a coordinating such a tough piece.
The Psycho Puck Lady discusses her marriage with hockey and turbulent times.
In a Football vs Hockey debate, Tim Rosenthal asks which sucker punch was worse. He posts videos of both for comparison's sake.
The Bruins Blog discusses the possibility that the Leafs are gearing up to make a move on Phil Kessel. Puck Daddy also covers the story.
In Women's hockey, Team USA beat Canada 2-1 to take the Canada Cup. The game was played at GM Place in Vancouver which will be the home of Olympic Hockey in February.
Two Line Pass at Puck Daddy has a round up of odd training cam invitees. No one ion the Pred's camp gets the odd nod.
Lyle Richardson of Spector's has his "legitimate" rumor roundup at The Hockey News. Heatley, Comrie and Kessel are in the mix.
From InGoal Magazine, ten goalie stories from the off season. This is a good list.
The New York Times ran a piece on Chris Botta and the demise of Islander's Point Blank. It is rare for a newspaper, especially the New York Times, to write about a sports blog.
Also, it's never too early for Memorial Cup predictions from Nathan Fournier at The Program. He expects Ryan Ellis's Windsor Spitfires to make it to the finals once again.
The Edmonton Sun has thirty questions for thirty teams today. Some are pretty good.
Finally, a bit of Chaco news in that the Campground is reopening well ahead of schedule.

Phoenix: The Aftermath and Tuesday Updates
First off, I would like to thank our guests on Monday's POTG Radio, Travis Hair of Five for Howling and Matt Prielipp of DaBuzz Media. It was a fun show highlighted by the breaking news of the Coyotes staying in Phoenix.
Once again, the power of a worldwide network of people posting on Twitter was shown to be the fastest way to get any breaking news or story. It was really amazing to see the first tweet on the Tweetdeck and having Chris Wassel and several folks in our POTG Radio chat room posting links with additional information as the show progressed.
I know it is hard to explain to many of our Canadian readers that it was exciting for me to see the Coyotes staying in Phoenix. Over the last month or so, I've formed an odd kinship with several of the leaders in the Save The Coyotes group, primarily because they were where Predator fans were two summers ago. I was on the same emotional roller coaster that they have been on and could relate only as someone who has been there before.
I know that fans in Winnipeg, Quebec, Hartford and other places have been there too, but Nashville and Phoenix share the same adversary who used unconventional methods to obtain both franchises with out playing by the NHL "rules".
The judge was clear that Balsillie's fatal mistake was trying to set his own agenda and time table. Bankruptcy courts are very procedural and will not be pressured into moving quicker than the process takes.
I, personally am a big supporter of a second team in the GTA but I also am in the minority that I would like to see it through an open bid for an expansion franchise that would let the market place a price on the value.
I don't think the whole Phoenix-Balsillie battle is over as I expect the Make It Seven camp to continue to pursue the Coyotes through the more orderly bid process that will take place over the summer. As we saw in Nashville, the high bidder probably won't win if there are locals that will take care of the City of Glendale and the lease situation on the arena.
The reaction in the media has been varied. Dirk at On The Forecheck had a great analysis of the situation last night that was astounding in the depth of analysis. Dee, the Islanders, Seventh Woman, had the best human interest story on the ruling.
Other Pred beat folks that had the "been there, done that" view on the story include Mark at The View From 111, Paul McCann, and John Glennon.
Local coverage and reaction from Phoenix can be found at SaveTheCoyotes, Fanster, Sports Arizona, and of course, Five For Howling.
The Canadian view can be found at The Star, the Globe and Mail, National Post, and MakeItSeven.
The raw document of the ruling can be found here.
Bill Daly's statement on behalf of the NHL is here.
On the Predators Beat...
Big news today that Martin Gelinas was named the director of player development for the Predators. This is a great choice as he was almost like an extra on-ice coach when he was with the Preds two years ago. His guidance really helped Jordin Tootoo become more of an offensive player, working long after practice to help Toots become more of a scoring threat. I never really understood why the Preds did not bring him back last year when they needed offensive help so desperately. Mark, Brandon, Rachel and Dirk share my enthusiasm for the hiring.
Forechecker has a good roundup of stories today here.
Rachel at What the Puck has a new story that covers several topics.
Around the NHL...
Matt at The View From My Seats has started a feature of taking the top eleven teams in the draft and has lined up a local writer from each team to give insight into each teams strengths, weaknesses, needs and what is expected on draft day. POTG contribution to the project will be posted on the actual draft day, June 26.
For those who care, Sean Avery was on Jimmy Fallon's show Monday night.
More later... (hopefully including my picks for the NHL Awards show)
