Rare Four Man Fight Was The Icing on the Cake in Sharks Rout of the Kings (Video)

Last night as I struggled to stay awake at the end of the San Jose - L.A Kings game I was treated to a rare four man scuffle involving Brad Richardson and Kyle Clifford from the Kings and Douglas Murray and Dan Boyle from the Sharks. For Boyle, the fight finished off a "Gordie Howe hat trick" as he also had a goal and an assist earlier in the contest.

Enjoy!

Clifford had also been involved in a separate quick bout with Jamal Mayers early in the contest.

Predators Hope to Clinch Playoff Spot with Win Tonight and Tuesday Tidbits

It is down to the final three games of the season for the Nashville Predators (42-26-11), starting with the visiting Atlanta Thrashers (33-33-12) at the Bridgestone Arena tonight at 7 p.m.

The Thrashers are one of three Eastern Conference teams that play a home and away series with the Predators. The teams previously met at Phillips Arena on December 6 when the Predators took a 2-0 lead only to fall 3-2 in overtime.

The Predators will have their work cut out for them playing a team with absolutely nothing to lose. The Preds have every thing to gain as a win tonight will clinch a spot in the Stanley Cup playoffs for the sixth time in the last seven NHL seasons.

The Predators have their sights set on much bigger things than their match with the Thrashers but they cannot overlook tonight's game. It will be important for the Preds to strike early and often and not give Atlanta a sniff of an upset.

Atlanta is 5-5 in their last ten and lost on their last game at Boston 3-2. Chris Vivlamore surmises that ex-Pred Chris Mason (13-11-3, 3.26, .898) will start for Atlanta. Mason stopped all 47 shots that he faced in a 1-0 shutout of Philadelphia in his last start. He would like nothing more than to beat his old team and slow their playoff celebration.

Pekka Rinne (31-21-9, 2.13, .929) should get the start for the Predators who are 9-2-1 in their last segment of games. With the Kings collapse and the Bruins meltdown last night, the Preds moved within one goal of second place Boston in the Jennings Trophy race (fewest goals allowed) but are still eight behind Vancouver which seems out of reach at this point.

After tonight's game, the Preds will have two games left. The home finale will be Friday against Columbus who has lost 16 straight to the Preds at the Bridgestone Arena and the final game of the regular season will be in St. Louis on Saturday night.

Other previews come from Amanda DiPaolo, Mark Willoughby, Chris Burton, Robby Stanley, Predatorial, Tennessean, and Predators.com.

Around the NHL...

Only two games last night and both were big. The Rangers scored five in a row to beat Boston 5-3 with three goals in the final 3:48 proving Barry Trotz right that the three goal lead is the hardest to hold in the NHL. In the nightcap, San Jose dismantled Los Angeles 6-1 to clinch the Pacific Division crown.

The PHWA issued a strong statement yesterday condemning the NHL for not over-ruling the dismissal of Chris Botta by the Islanders early this season. Three chapters have decided not to participate in the NHL award voting as have many individual voters. PHWA President Kevin Allen offers perspective. Puck Daddy also adds good insight.

Cory Perry, Jerome Iginla, and Jhonas Enroth were the three stars of the week last week in the NHL.

Adrian Dater would like to see Joe Sacco return next season. Dater also has an all encompassing round-up at Versus where he back tracks on his harsh words from last week on the Phoenix situation.

In an odd rant yesterday, Mavs owner Mark Cuban takes on the "paid" internet reporters.

Big programing changes are in store at NHL Home Ice on XM as of April 13. NHL Live is moving to NHL Network and NHL.com exclusively and in the 3:00 to 5:00 PM CDT time slot. Hockey Blogs Thrive in Smashville - Thanks to the Predators for Their Support

Several years ago, when the Predators were struggling financially, there were few local hockey blogs. Dirk Hoag was one of the few in the early post lockout era that still survives today.

From those troubled times, the Nashville blog community has flourished. Kevin Wilson and the Nashville Predators formally established a "Blogger's Row" in the press box this season that gave local writes access to players, coaches, and information in order to grow interest for the Predators both locally and nationally. Thanks to Kevin and the Preds for the opportunity.

There are many great and talented writers that have participated in "The Row" including Dirk and his On the Forecheck stable, Ryan Porth and his RLD writers, Amanda DiPaolo of Predlines, Jeremy Gover and the Section 303 group, Robby Stanley of Hockey Night in Nashville, Kris Martel of Predatorial, David Singleton of Hockey Independent, Jas Faulkner of The Hockey Writers, and us at PredsOnTheGlass.

Paul McCann who writes for Hockey Buzz has a unique perspective from the public address announcers booth. Mainstream Media guys Josh Cooper and Bryan Mullen also blog aside from their Tennessean gig at Inside Predators.

Other wonderful writers that are no less talented that have chosen to write from outside the row include, Mark Willoughby of The View from 111, AJ at Pull My Fang Finger, Rachel at What the Puck, Josh Farrar at Fang Finger Fever, and the newest addition is a group at Bloguin writing under Fang Faction.

This group of folks give their heart and soul to an effort that pays nothing (or a few token dollars) and is enormously time consuming. Most of the above group have new posts anywhere from several times daily to a few times a week. It is done for the passion of the game of hockey and to support the efforts of the Predators' organization.

Out of this effort, three local blogs are ranked in the top 15 hockey related sites nationally by the Wikio Ratings Service in their latest release.

Predators Need to Finish Strong in "Trap" Week and Monday Round-Up

Coming off a 4-3 overtime loss to Detroit on Saturday, the Nashville Predators need to refocus and win their final three games against teams that are going nowhere.

Taken individually, any one of the three could be considered a "trap" game but as it is could you call this a "trap" week?

First up is Atlanta on Tuesday night who is on the outside of the top eight in the Eastern Conference. They are 5-5 in their last ten games and have played decently at times lately.

On Friday and Saturday, the Preds play division opponents Columbus in Nashville and St. Louis on the road respectively. Nashville has beaten Columbus sixteen straight times at Bridgestone Arena and I'm sure the Bluejackets have their calendars circled with this meeting being their "playoff game."

There is little doubt that St. Louis is also pointing to their final home game on Saturday, looking for a bit of redemption for a mediocre season by beating the Predators, with the potential of ending their good season on a sour note.

After the game Saturday, Barry Trotz was not that worried about the Predator's play and was pleased with their third period response to Detroit tying the game up. "They get a goal and were tied up, then we are all over them. We had 15 scoring chances in the third period, they had four."

I thought in the third period that Jimmy Howard was the difference. It wasn't poor play by us, he was the difference in the third. I thought we were really strong on the draws against one of the top teams on the draw and we did a great job."

The Predators need to come out with that same type of pressure and enthusiasm tomorrow night and not let Atlanta get into the game.

The Predators ended the weekend in sixth place in the Western Conference. Anaheim had a chance to move past the Predators last night but failed, losing to Dallas 4-3 with two goals waived off in the closing seconds.

The Predators will pose for the team picture today before practice at the Bridgestone Arena and will face the Thrashers tomorrow at 7 p.m.

Shane O'Brien and Todd Bertuzzi Fight Twice in Preds-Wings Battle (Video)

Todd Bertuzzi, who had not had a regular season fighting major since March 26, 2009 when he fought Rostislav Klesla, squared off twice with Shane O'Brien during the Wings 4-3 overtime win over Nashville.

The first scuffle was at 4:34 in the opening period. The second was at 2:43 in the second six seconds after the Predators had taken a 3-0 lead that seemed breath life back into the Wings.

After the game O'Brien said, "He's a big guy, 6'4" or what ever. He's been in the league a long time. He knows what he's doing. He's strong. You don't win every fight you are in, but when a guy jumps you, there's a little bit of pride involved."

"I just thought I'd go back at him and I thought being up 3-0 we had everything in tact there. I still think that the two goals they got to get them going were kind of unlucky. For whatever reason, we don't get too many bounces here."

Detroit eventually won the game 4-3 in overtime.

Wings Score Four Straight to Beat Preds 4-3 in Overtime

The Detroit Red Wings came into their game with the Nashville Predators wanting to make a statement after losing four in a row to the Predators and they did it by coming from behind with four consecutive goals to post a 4-3 win in overtime at the Bridgestone Arena on Saturday Afternoon.

Dan Cleary tipped a shot from Brian Rafalski 2:58 into the extra period to seal the two points for Detroit and clinch their 20th consecutive postseason berth and dampen any hope for the Predators to catch the Wings in the Central Division chase.

The Predators' goals came from Ryan Suter, Marty Erat, and Sergei Kostitsyn while the Wings got two markers from Justin Abdelkader and one from Jakub Kindl before Cleary's overtime winner.

Detroit's Jimmy Howard was the difference maker in the third period as the Predators had 15 scoring chances but failed to find the net. One save on a shot by Joel Ward with 10:02 remaining was the save of the game as he stoned the puck that could have allowed the Predators to regain the lead. For the game, Howard stopped 31 of 34 Nashville shots.

Pekka Rinne was the hard luck loser as he allowed four goals and made 37 saves. There was little he could have done on all four goals.

The game started with a true playoff feel as the sell out crowd of 17,113 was in top form as the game started cheering every move by their beloved Predators.

Detroit appeared to take the lead at 16:16 in the first period but on a shot from Nicklas Lidstrom that found the net but the goal was immediately waived off due to a goalie interference call on Tomas Holmstrom.

After a boarding call on Abdelkader at 18:07 and a delay of game against Holmstrom at 18:34, Suter gave the Predators the 1-0 lead with 59.7 seconds left in opening period as he took a shot from the high slot that found the net.

The Predators came out in the second period and scored two quick goals to go ahead 3-0. Detroit took another delay of game 16 seconds into the period that set up the Preds' second power play goal when Shea Weber sent a pass to Erat who redirected it under Howard's pad at 1:42.

Then 55 seconds later, Mike Fisher fired a shot to the right of Howard that resulted in a perfect rebound to Kostitsyn who slapped it past Howard to give the Preds the 3-0 lead.

Then the tide turned and Detroit came back with two quick goals. Kindle scored an unassisted goal at 3:28 from the right circle and Abdelkader scored his first goal at 4:49 on a fluky shot that bounced in front of the net to get past Rinne.

The game remained a 3-2 until Abdelkader scored his second goal on a redirect from Todd Bertuzzi with 3:59 left in the game to send the game to overtime. In overtime, Cleary scored the game winner at 2:58 on another redirect from Brian Rafalski.

Ryan Suter said, "You can't take your foot off the gas. You have to keep going on them."

Shane O'Brien and Bertuzzi squared off twice in the contest, the first initiated by Bertuzzi and the second one by O'Brien. The first scuffle was at 4:34 in the opening period. The second was at 2:43 in the second six seconds after the Predators had taken a 3-0 lead that seemed breath life back into the Wings.

"You don't win every fight you are in, but when a guy jumps you, there's a little bit of pride involved," said O'Brien after the game.

The game was marred by 17 penalties, eleven against the Wings and six against the Predators.

Coach Barry Trotz has a new philosophy, "It's the hardest one in the league right now, a three goal lead because you think you have lots of breathing room."

"It used to be a two goal lead . Now because the game is played without the hooking and holding, it's the three goal lead. You think you have breathing room but the team gets one and the momentum shifts."

In taking the game to overtime, the Predators picked up a point and remain in sixth place in the Western Conference with 95 points.

The Predators will take Sunday off and practice on Monday at the Bridgestone Arena to prepare for Tuesday's home game against the Atlanta Thrashers.

Detroit Visits Nashville in Huge Game for Both Teams and Saturday Round-Up

NHL on the Fly Preds-Wings Preview

The Detroit Red Wings (44-23-10) meet the Nashville Predators (42-26-10) in their final regular season meeting this year in a special 2 p.m. start time at the Bridgestone Arena in spite of all the Mule Day distractions.

Detroit is in third place in the Western Conference while the Predators are in sixth, four points back, and have a mathematical chance to catch the Wings for the Central Division crown but it would take a lot of help since the Wings have played one less game.

This is the sixth and final regular season meeting between the two teams this season. The Preds have won four out of five so far. The Preds fell to the Wings 5-2 on October 30th at Joe Louis Arena in a game that had the Preds basically playing with 17 skaters. On December 8, the Preds beat the Wings 3-2 in Detroit in a game featuring strong defense and goaltending.

In Nashville, on February 5, the Predators had a 3-0 win over the Wings in a solid performance at both ends of the ice. Four days later, the Preds won their final game of the year in Detroit 4-1. The two teams met two weeks ago at Bridgestone and Rinne and the rookies led the Preds to a 3-1 victory.

The Wings are coming off a 10-3 thrashing at the hands of the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday night and appear to want to make a statement against the Predators who they have struggled with all season. The Wings were just 5-5-4 in March.

The Predators seem to be peaking at just the right time as they have won nine of their last eleven and were 10-3-2 during the month of March.

Both teams are struggling with injuries. Pavel Datsyuk and Chris Osgood are out and Mike Modano and G Jimmy Howard will return from injuries. Jordin Tootoo is questionable for the Predators after getting shaken up in Colorado. If he cant go, making out the line-up card will be easy for Barry Trotz, who only has 20 other players.

Jimmy Howard (34-15-5, 2.77, .908) will be in net for Detroit after missing a week with a sore shoulder. Howard is 3-3-1, 2.44, .920 in eight career games against Nashville.

Pekka Rinne (31-21-8, 2.10, .929) will go for the Predators. He is an outstanding 8-2-2, 1.98, .941 in his career agaiinst the Wings.

After today's game, the Predators will have only three games left beginning with Atlanta in Nashville on Tuesday and then Columbus here on Friday and at St. Louis in the finale on Saturday.

Other previews come from Amanda DiPaolo, Predatorial, Hockey Night in Nashville, The Tennessean, Marc Torrence, and Predators.com.

For previews from the Motor City, check out MLive, the Detroit Free Press, Winging It in Motown, and the Detroit News.

Johan Franzen Will Make Special Appearance at Columbia's Mule Day

In a surprise announcement this afternoon, the Maury County Briddle and Saddle Club revealed that a special addition has been made to this weekend's Mule Day activities in Columbia, Tennessee. Johan "The Mule" Franzen has been added to the Mule Day line-up and will ride alongside Mrs. Knoxie Goad who is the Grand Marshall of the 2011 Mule Day Parade.

It was only by a fluke that arrangements were made for Franzen to participate in the hour long parade that starts only a couple of hours before the start of the game between the Nashville Predators and the Detroit Red Wings at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.

Goad's son-in-law, Mitch Filburn is a Michigan transplant that moved to Columbia to work at the now shuttered General Motors plant in Spring Hill. He is a lifelong Red Wings fan and worked diligently with Jacob Duhaime, the Wing's Social Media Manager to make it happen.

The real breakthrough was an agreement that Filburn made with Vanderbilt LifeFlight in Nashville who agreed to pluck Franzen up at the end of the parade for a 20 minute helicopter ride to deliver him to the arena in Nashville in time for the team's pre-game skate.

We contacted Franzen by phone and he said, "It has been a lifetime dream to be able to attend Mule Day but it is always during the season so I never expected to be able to go. It will be a privilege to ride with Mrs Goad and be surrounded by more mules than I've ever seen in my life. I really feel that I will fit in well with the other mules."

Here is the full release from Maury County Briddle and Saddle Club...

Columbia, Tennessee (April 1, 2011) The Maury County Briddle and Saddle Club is pleased to announce that Mrs. Knoxie Goad will serve as Grand Marshall of the 2011 Mule Day Parade. Mrs. Knoxie is a charter member of the club and has a place on the Mule Day Hall of Fame. She was one of the original planners in 1973 when a committee was formed to study feasibility of bringing Mule Day back to Maury County after a few years absence. Her dedication over the years has contributed to it’s success. She as served in many capacities, but is best know for arts & crafts director, concessions director and office manager. Now officially retired from her appointed duties, she still supports the Mule Day Committee. Besides her involvement in Mule Day, she is very active in her community and church activities.

Sitting with Mrs. Goad in the lead wagon in the parade will be Johan Franzen, a Swedish right wing hockey player that plays for the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League. Franzen's nickname is "The Mule" as he has had a special affinity for the breed of animals since he was a small child in rural Sweden. He has patterned his style of play on the ice after the four-legged variety of mules since he was a young boy. The 31 year old athlete is a native of Vetlanda, Sweden and is married to Cecilia. The couple enjoys life in Detroit but spends the off season in their native land. This will mark the first time that a person native to another country will ride in the lead wagon in the parade.

So Who Is the Predators' Masterton Trophy Nominee?

The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is awarded annually at the NHL Awards show at the end of the Stanley Cup Finals. The method for voting is a little different than most of the awards because all 30 teams have a nominee and from that list the three finalist are chosen.

Here is the definition of the award from the NHL, "The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is an annual award under the trusteeship of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association and is given to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey. The winner is selected in a poll of all chapters of the PHWA at the end of the regular season."

In recent years, the award voting has been somewhat corrupted and has been given to folks as a type a comeback player of the year award or someone who has returned to play after an injury or life changing experience. Jokes have been made that it is an award no one wants because it means some bad had to happen in order to qualify.

Nashville's Steve Sullivan won two years ago after he returned from an almost two year absence with back problems. Last season, Jose Theodore won after having a stellar season that started with the death of his infant son.

Each local chapter of the PHWA decides on the team's nominee and all are announced. Currently, the voting in Nashville has been completed and we are waiting to hear who will represent the Predators.

During the preseason, I had a great premonition that J.P. Dumont was going to hit the ground running this season and return to his 70 point a season form that we saw in his first three seasons in Nashville and win the overall Masterton Trophy. He looked great in the preseason and Barry Trotz was singing his praises, saying that J.P. looked the best he had ever looked coming into camp.

The local PHWA voters have had an enjoyable time over the last couple of weeks reminding me of my preseason prediction and what a "swing and a miss" it was. So in retrospect, I'll take a look at a few choices they could have made and pronounce my own "winner."

Here are my nominees...

J.P. Dumont - Let's beat a dead horse here. Trotz often discusses J.P. by saying "He's a real pro."

Shane O'Brien - He went from being on the outs with a reputation as being a party boy at the Roxy Nightclub in Vancouver to being a model citizen in Nashville who claims to not even know what "Tootsies" is. This year, he has been a leader on the ice and in the dressing room.

Sergei Kostitsyn - In the off season, the Predators acquired Kostitsyn for the rights to Dustin Boyd and Dan Ellis and he signed for the league minimum salary. Basically, Montreal could not wait to get rid of him. In turn, he has had his most productive season scoring 19 goals and picking up 25 assists for the Predators.

Joel Ward - There is no one who exemplifies the Predators' warrior mentality more than Ward. He sacrifices his body every game and has played through numerous injuries all season. He is well liked by players and fans alike. Ward too the long road to the NHL through the Canadian college route which is rarely successful.

Mike Fisher - New to the Predators, Mike has had to withstand the torment of being known as "Mr. Carrie Underwood" since his marriage to the wildly popular music star. He is one of the top players in the league in charitable work and has his own foundation to give back to the community.

David Legwand - Being Nashville's first draft pick in 1998 has been somewhat of an albatross around his neck throughout his career. Folks have expected him to be a superstar and fail to realize what an integral part of the Predators that he is on a team that thrives on his steady two-way play. He has been under-appreciated for years and deserves a little recognition.

Marty Erat - Like Legwand, he has also been under appreciated and his long-term, high dollar contract has opened him up to criticism from fans and the media. His pass in gave five of the playoffs that led to a huge swing in the series against Chicago could have been devastating to many players but Erat has returned for an excellent season this year in helping lead the Predators back to the playoffs.

Jordin Tootoo - Clearly he is the most popular Predator among most folks in Nashville that don't follow hockey. Despised around the league for his tough style of play, Tootoo met his demons head on and volunteered for league sponsored rehabilitation in mid season. To this point he seems to be doing well. With a big year next season, he could be next year's nominee.

Matthew Lombardi, Marcel Goc, Cal O'Reilly, and Francis Bouillon - all are potential nominees for next years award if they have big comeback seasons.

My choice for 2010-2011 Predators' Masterton nominee is...

Pekka Rinne - As one of the most under-recognized top goalies in the NHL, Rinne has suffered through anonymity, name mispronunciation, and lack of support for this seasons Hart Trophy, which goes to the player most valuable to his team. He will also probably not win the Vezina trophy for top goaltender, due to a widespread, season long adoration for Boston goalie Tim Thomas.

Rinne has persevered and showed great dedication to his team, Predator fans, and the game of hockey in spite of these injustices. As far as sportsmanship, no one is a nicer guy both on and off the ice than Rinne. After every Predator loss, he tries to take responsibility and feels that he has somehow let his team down for letting any goals into the net.

In reality, Rinne will not be the local nominee and it is doubtful that he will be nominated for the Hart or win the Vezina. Still, there is no one on the Nashville Predators that is more worthy of special recognition than Pekka Rinne who has clearly been the teams saving grace and this years' Predators' MVP.

Corey Perry Speaks After Being Named NHL Player of the Month for March

Corey Perry was named the NHL Player of the Month for March and spoke with the press on Friday after receiving the Award. Perry is now the league leader in goals and is a leading contender for the Hart Trophy as the Most Valuable Player to his team.

Here is the full transcript from the NHL...

COREY PERRY

DAVID KEON: Welcome everyone. I'm David Keon of the National Hockey League's public relations department and today we have with us Corey Perry. Thanks to Corey for taking the time to join us and answer your questions, and thanks to Alex Gilchrist of the Ducks' PR staff for arranging this call.

Corey helped the Ducks post an 11-3-0 record in March tallying a League high 15 goals including four game winners, propelling Anaheim from 11th place to 7th in the Western Conference standings. He also tied for the March lead in points with Vancouver's Daniel Sedin at 21 and was named first Star of the Month around half an hour ago.

For the season, Corey leads the NHL in goals with 46, and shares first place in game?winning goals with ten and he also ranks fourth in points with 89 and is tied for fourth in power play goals with 13.

The Ducks have five games remaining in their regular season schedule including a home and home series with Los Angeles on April 8 and 9.

Q. Obviously with your recent run here, you've put yourself in contention to win the Maurice Richard Trophy, is that something you thought was a possibility in your career prior to this recent stretch?

COREY PERRY: I don't know if you can ever say that you're going to win it. I mean, you have to have a lot of great bounces and teammates to play with. I have to give a lot of credit to them. Recently it's been going well, and you know, I’m just trying to help the team win. That's all I'm worried about.

Q. That being said, is it going to be possible to avoid thinking about the potential 50 goals in the final week and a half of the season?

COREY PERRY: Iit's tough not to think about it. But you know, you never know what can happen in the last couple of games. We have a handful of games left and we'll see how it goes.

Q. Wanted to ask you about a couple of your teammates, Teemu Selanne, a guy that is starting to get more recognition as the season has gone on. Have you been amazed since you joined that team as to just how ageless he seems?

COREY PERRY: Well, he's a guy that he comes in every day with a smile on his face, and he just loves the game. He's been that way ever since I've been here and ever since I've known him.
Just the recognition he's getting now is nothing new to us. He's done it his whole career. He's climbing into the standings and in the points standings. He keeps passing everybody. It seems like he passes everybody every night. He's a guy that just loves the game and hopefully he comes back.

Q. Just wanted to ask you, kind of give your impressions of Ray Emery. What were your expectations for him when you signed him? I imagine he's already blown past that.

COREY PERRY: He's a guy that came in, and we needed somebody to step up when Jonas went down. He came in and has done what everybody has asked of him. I don't know if too many people know his whole story behind the surgery and everything. He's gone beyond expectations and he's taken this team to another level.

Q. Just wondering about another one of your teammates, and that would be Cam Fowler, a lot of people were surprised, and I think Bob Murray, the most, when he dropped all the way to you guys in the draft. Can you just talk about how this guy has grown and now he's gobbling up big minutes and power play minutes and really giving you offensive force from the back end?

COREY PERRY: Well, I mean, there's been a lot of talk about how he did drop in the draft, but we are very happy to have him. He's a guy that came in and he's playing big minutes for us. He plays on our power play, and he's a guy that, you know, he's going to be a quarterback on the power play for a long time. He's only 19 years old and doing all of these great things. He's scoring game?winners, first in overtime, and he's jumped up in the last few weeks. He's just a guy that's playing beyond his years.

Q. Is there anything that you have been able to take from Teemu Selanne's game that you've been able to apply to your game to make you a better player?

COREY PERRY: I mean, just the way he trains himself off the ice. Just watching him over the past six years has been enough for me. You know, he comes in every day, like I said, with a smile on his face. He loves the game, and the way he works in practice is truly amazing at 40 years old.

It doesn't seem like he's aging at all, and hopefully he comes back for a couple more years. We have a running joke in the dressing room that we are three?quarters of the way there, getting him to come back, so hopefully he's listening to us.

Q. If you could talk just a little about the resilience of the team as a whole. Obviously it's been an unusual year with the Hiller situation, missing Ryan Getzlaf for so long; can you talk about how the team has persevered?

COREY PERRY: Well, I mean, when guys go down with injuries, people have to step up and kind of fill that hole and take on a leadership role. I think guys in the dressing room realized what was going on and where we were in the standings. We had to overcome all of those injuries. So it's not an easy thing to do when you have two big guys go down that kind of carry this team. Everybody stepped up and you have to give a lot of credit to everybody. We kind of ran with what we had.

Q. Do you view the game tomorrow night as sort of a possible playoff preview?

COREY PERRY: I think so. I mean, they are playing well. They are healthy and you know, we are playing well and we are healthy. So you know, it's going to be a lot of excitement. It's going to be fun and we are trying to get the fourth, fifth seed. So you never know what can happen.

Q. Just want to know, you have had a few losing streaks this year, a few big ones, I know you started the year not as you wanted to. What was the toughest streak for you from your perspective for the team to straighten itself out?

COREY PERRY: Nobody wants to start the season the way we did. I think we went 0?3 or 0?4, whatever it was. We have gone through some tough stretches. I think we know what it feels like and we don't want to go back there. So going into the playoffs, I think that's just going to help us.

Q. Obviously you don't go into a month thinking you'll score 15 goals. Do you have anyway to explain what got into you in March?

COREY PERRY: Not really. You just go into every game expecting to play well. Things happened in March that doesn't happen very often. It's one of those things where you go out, you play your game, and you see what happens. But you know, March was a good month, and hopefully there's more to come.

Q. Most players, if they were junior scorers or NHL scorers, but you were more of a passer in junior and in your NHL career you've been more of a playmaker. Is this one of those years where you're shooting more and the puck is going in or what? I think the most goals you had as a junior was 47 in London, and you've got 46 goals.

COREY PERRY: I don't know. I think I'm playing the same way I did back in London. But obviously, you know, the puck's going into the back of the net. I've got to give a lot of the credit to Ryan and Bobby. I mean, they have done everything they can do, and they are finding me and I'm just trying to get open in the slot, and things are going in the back of the net.

Congrats to the Vancouver Canucks on Winning the NHL President's Trophy

All they do is win and now they have captured the President's cup for the 2010-2011 season. Congrats to the Canucks and their fans.

Here is the official release from the NHL on the award...

VANCOUVER CANUCKS CAPTURE 2010-11 PRESIDENTS' TROPHY

NEW YORK (March 31, 2011) -- The Vancouver Canucks have captured the 2010-11 Presidents' Trophy, awarded to the NHL club finishing the regular season with the League's best record. The Canucks (52-17-9, 113 points) clinched the trophy tonight following a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings.

The Canucks, celebrating their 40th anniversary season in 2010-11, have claimed the Presidents' Trophy for the first time. Tonight's milestone victory caps a regular season in which the club already has set franchise records for most points (113), most wins (52) and most road wins (26). Their 17-1-2 run in games from Nov. 24 through Jan. 8 marked the best 20-game stretch in franchise history.

The Canucks have scored the most goals in the NHL (253), allowed the fewest (177) and have recorded the top power-play and penalty-killing percentages (24.7% and 86.6%, respectively). No club in the League's 'expansion era' (since 1967-68) has finished first in each of these categories in a single season.

Displaying the depth required of a successful NHL club, Vancouver has overcome a rash of injuries to their blueline corps throughout the season. Defensemen Keith Ballard (17 games), Kevin Bieksa (16), Alexander Edler (29), Dan Hamhuis (15) and Sami Salo (55) all have missed significant time.

Among the Canucks' top individual performances:

* LW Daniel Sedin leads the NHL in scoring with 100 points (41 goals, 59 assists). Twin brother Henrik won the scoring race last year and ranks third this season (19-72--91), one point behind second-place Martin St. Louis of the Tampa Bay Lightning (30-62--92). Among the many famous brother combinations who have graced the NHL since its founding, none has captured scoring titles in back-to-back seasons nor finished 1-2 in League scoring in the same season. The last time brothers finished first and third in League scoring was 1942-43 (Doug and Max Bentley, Chicago Blackhawks).

* Center Ryan Kesler is tied for fourth place among NHL goal-scorers with 37, surpassing his single-season high of 26 set in 2008-09.

* Goaltender Roberto Luongo leads all goaltenders in wins (37) and ranks third in goals-against average (2.14) and save percentage (.927). Rookie Cory Schneider has excelled in a backup role (15-3-2, 2.16, .930).

As Presidents' Trophy winners, the Canucks are guaranteed home-ice advantage throughout their participation in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Rinne Saves Predators' Bacon and Friday Findings

Were it not for the Vezina Trophy quality performance by Pekka Rinne last night as the game wound down, there would be no joy in Mudville (or Nashville either) this morning as the entire team wore down and left Rinne to fend off the Avalanche by himself.

Colorado played dead for most of the game but came alive in the last seven minutes of the game after the Predators had claimed a 3-0 lead. It is hard to say if the problem was the altitude or the fact that Colorado had shown little to fear throughout most of the game, or a combination of both.

Regardless, this scene of a collapse and not finishing off teams in the final minutes is becoming a major issue. After a similar collapse against a much better Anaheim team a week ago, Barry Trotz said "When are we going to learn?" He referenced game five against Chicago last year in the playoffs as another game to learn from. Now he has another object lesson to point to for the Predators.

Saturday's match with Detroit should be a meeting of two coaches who aren't happy with their team's last outing. Detroit was man-handled by St. Louis 10-3 on Wednesday which was the most goals given up by a Wings team in 17 years.

Detroit, who has 98 points, fell into third place behind the Sharks last night. The Predators moved into sixth with 94 points, the same as fifth place Los Angeles. The Preds are also a point behind Phoenix who is in fourth.

For the month of March the Predators went 10-3-2 for 22 points which bests January's 18 and December's 17 as the most productive month of the season.

The win over the Avs made it a perfect 4-0 season sweep over Colorado.

In an oddity last night, the Predators never went on the penalty kill, with the only infraction being after time expired when David Legwand and Erik Johnson mixed it up.

The Predators scheduled practice at noon at Centennial has been confirmed. With an early game on Saturday, the Predators cannot take the day off.
