There has been speculation for several weeks as to whether Mattias Ekholm would spend the season in North America or return to his team in Sweden as he is allowed to do in his contract if he does not make the Predators roster.
Thanks to Seth Lake for the link to an article from Sweden that includes news from Ekholm's agent, Pontus Noren that he did not make the Predators opening day roster. There is no indication whether he will report to Milwaukee, which the Predators would prefer, or play in Europe. If he returns to Europe, there is little chance that he would return this season.
Update from Josh Cooper at Centennial - Ekholm still in Nashville
Post practice update from @JoshuaCooper: Trotz announces no roster moves today. Says Kyle Wilson cleared waivers and should be going to Milwaukee.
This is even more curious considering that the agent is unclear and the Preds aren't saying anything has happened with Ekholm.
We hope to receive official clarification of the situation from the Predators in the near future. Make the jump for a very broken Google Translate version of the article...
Nashville turned down Ekholm
Mattias Ekholm may be heading home to Bryn again. Data came late last night said that 21-year-old does not take place among seven hills in the Nashville Predators NHL team. - That is correct, says agent Ekholm Pontus Norén.
Landslagsbacken Mattias Ekholm's hockey future is unclear at this time. Yesterday came the information that says he does not take place among seven hills in the NHL team Nashville.
Something that is confirmed by his agent Pontus Norén.- That's right. Nashville estimates that Matthias is really close to a place, but still choose other players in front of him.
The fight for who gets to stay and who can start the season in the minor league AHL is thus very tough for NHL start to the weekend.
According to the newspaper Tennessean got Ekholm's toughest rival for the last back spot, Ryan Ellis, yesterday told that he sent to Milwakuee Admirals.
No official communique regarding Mattias Ekholm did not come before this magazine going to press. But Ekholm Pontus Norén agent announced that he was and Ekholm been told that there will be no place in the NHL at present.- No, but he is really, really close to a place. So what happens with Brynäs I can not tell you right now. It may be that Ekholm go home, but I do not know yet, says Noren.
The reason that Ekholm not take place among seven hills, although Ryan Ellis, his toughest rival for the last place, then sent to the AHL and Milwaukee is that Nashville had a good chance veteran Francis Bouillon 36-year-old, who was injured last season, has started to train on ice and Nashville is now hoping for a comeback.
How Mattias Ekholm should do now - go home and play with Brynäs - or stick around and after all competing for a place in Nashville is unclear. The sport Ekholm searched without success for Monday evening and Brynäs sports manager Mike Sundlöv had not heard more than the data says Ekholm not take place on seven hills.
Nashville Predators NHL-premiere play on Friday against the Columbus Blue Jackets gone.

It looks as though those playoff pictures of Shea Weber wearing his "mountain man" beard made an impression on the writer who is now referring to the Nashville defense corps as "hills."
I think the "hills" is more a function of Google Translate which also called Sergei Kostitsyn "earrings" in a past effort.
