POTG Wednesday Headlines, News, and Links: Hockey is Back in Smashville

One great bonus of a Monday holiday is that "Hump Day" comes early in the week which is always a good thing. Yesterday's release of the Predators camp schedule and activities along with most of the team hitting the ice for informal workouts leaves an air of anticipation that hockey season is finally here for the die-hards who will be at Centennial Sportsplex on Saturday for the start of rookie camp.

We are also looking forward to attending Petey's Party tomorrow night at the Bridgestone Arena and seeing a bunch of folks that we haven't seen all Summer. A few tickets still remain.

Make the jump for the rest of today's news and links...

Programming Note...

Today at Noon (CDT), the incomparable Chris Johnston of the Canadian Press will appear on Ryan Porth's RLD Hockey Talk. Chris is one of our favorite people as we always look forward to hanging out with him at  the major NHL events. Ryan will also have Josh Rimer from NHL Home Ice who has been on the front end of the Sidney Crosby story and we will have his reaction minutes after the big press conference,

Special Thanks...

to Gus Katsaros and McKeen's Hockey for an advance copy of this year's Yearbook that is full of everything you need to know for your fantasy draft or just hockey in general. It is 144 pages of statistics, projections, and data that is so plentiful that an old guy like me has to find his reading glasses, but it is well worth it. You can order your copy here or look for it at the listed stores in Canada and the US in the next few days.

In Pred Nation...

Ryan Porth at Smashville 24/7 spoke with Pekka Rinne and Barry Trotz at the informal skate yesterday and it sounded positive.

Josh Cooper also has notes from the first day of informal workouts at Centennial Iceplex.

Mark Willoughby has the link to a video with several reactions to Wade Belak's passing.

Smashville 24/7 previews Anders Lindback's sophomore season.Ryan also has the players to watch at rookie camp.

Amanda DiPaolo gives her thoughts about rookie camp starting on Saturday.

Ex-Tennessean Preds beat guy Bryan Mullen is back with this announcement @BMullenPreds: I'm back, now as Digital Media Coor. for the Nashville Predators and Bridgestone Arena. Writing news, features, etc. Fun times. #preds

Dirk Hoag can't help himself, bringing up the "Crosby's" incident again with Bryan's hiring. Bryan and Josh will never live that one down. One of the great moments in Preds media history.

Paul McCann has joined the charge to help save UAH Hockey.

Marc Torrence has mined the Predators player ratings from EA Sports NHL 12.

Michael Latta is the rookie preview for the day at OTF.

There is a petition afloat to save U of Alabama-Huntsville Hockey. Sign up and be counted. Folks nationwide need to join in to save the southernmost NCAA team and the host of this year's Frozen Four.

Admirals Short Shifts has the plan for you to go see the Ads play this season.

Dan Bradley has a poll on who is the Predators biggest rivals.

Ex-Pred Matthew Lombardi has been given the go ahead to skate full out but to avoid contact.

The latest on the wayward Predator from @dchesnokov: Alexander Radulov is now a Superhero in a new #KHL comics book.

Here is news that you won't see elsewhere. If you are in Ft. Walton Beach on September 8, you can paddle with the Predators Ice Girls at YOLO Board Adventures.

Around the NHL...

Sidney Crosby is scheduled to make his first appearance since the spring later today at 11:30 a.m.(CDT) in the media room at CONSOL Energy Center. I am assuming that it will be streamed at the team web site and TSN is definitely set to have it live.

Amid much fanfare the Winnipeg Jets unveiled their new jerseys yesterday by walking out of a turboprop airplane. They did manage to stand in front of a jet for pictures.

In another big fanfare, Alexander Ovechkin announced his switch to Bauer. This video from Russian Machine Never Breaks is more interesting.

Ryan Porth has a good ranking of all the NHL head coaches. I don't see too many that I would disagree with. RLD's 30 in 30 is up to the Chicago Blackhawks.

E.J. Hradek takes a look back at some offseason highlights.

Helene Elliott reports that Teemu Selanne is waiting for his knee to get stronger but mentally wants to play.

News of progress on Quebec City's new arena brings with it the standard stupid remark that the Preds may be available to move there.

Odds and Ends...

On the movie front, Russ Cohen says that Warrior sets the bar for sports movies.

The best pictures yet of the lunar landing sites were released over the past few days.

An ancient lake, that was good for boating, I'm sure, was found on Mars.

Wiffle balls are American made and plan to stay that way. That was the best game in the neighborhood as a kid.

Here's another happy guy in his mugshot.
